SCOPAC project: Sustainable Composites based Packaging from Low-Value Waste

This project aims to find new use for low value plastic packaging waste material by adding (waste) fibers. The resulting composite materials will be tested for their viability in pallets for the packaging and transport industry.

Brightlands Materials Center has developed an innovative technology with pilot industrial scale equipment to recycle fiber reinforced thermoplastics. Using this technology, the circular application of fiber reinforced thermoplastics is demonstrated preventing as much as possible downgrading of the performance and value of material.

In the SCOPAC project this technology is being employed by partners Witcom and Brightlands Materials Center to combine low value packaging waste with waste fibers from partner Eurocarbon. Attero and Tusti have expressed their interest in the goal of the project and provide low-quality polymer packaging waste.

Partners Q-Pall and Plastica will evaluate and test the resulting upgraded composite material in rigid packaging pallets and as such replace current solutions based on virgin materials.

The consortium stretches across a potential new and more sustainable supply chain that aims to keep waste materials in use. BMC is planning to upscale this technology to a proven capacity of 200 tons/year and to demonstrate a suitable circular business model to firstly support the SMEs in the south of the Netherlands and later in other Dutch or European regions.

“Green” roof on Wittenburg B.V., a small act with a large impact

The process of getting the green roof installed on Wittenburg has been in the making for a while and in January of 2023 the installation started. The roof was completed shortly thereafter in February 2023, making the offices of Wittenburg even more sustainable.

For Wittenburg there were many reasons why installing this green roof was an attractive alternative to the former gravel covering.

  • Absorbing rainwater
  • Cleaner air
  • Lower ambient temperature
  • Better indoor climate
  • Energy savings through better heat and cold insulation
  • Increasing biodiversity
  • Increasing the mental and physical health of the employees

Preparing for extreme weather as well as employee satisfaction are high on our priority list, finding a green sustainable solution for both problems was a big motivator to make the choice of having the green roof installed. Another added benefit of the green roof is that there is less pollution created and spread, the roof will have an increased product life and the excess water wont run of the building. This will help lower the impact on the municipal water system.

We hope to help inspire other companies to also look at how they can become more sustainable. For Wittenburg sustainability is an ever active mentality and action. The green roof along with our heat recovery system that allows us to use waste heat to heat the building helps us to maintain a nice office climate without the use of natural gas. In addition we have 800 solar panels on our roof and compensate our remaining electricity usage by green energy certificates. It is through these running sustainability actions that we hope to achieve our net zero goals.

EFQM 3-star recognition

Thanks to the hard work of all our employees, the Wittenburg Group is proud to announce that we have received our EFQM 3-star recognition!
On February 24, our Vice-Director, Anne Looije-Traa and Global Quality Assurance Manager, Jeroen P. Vaartjes MA received the official presentation of our EFQM Business Excellence 3-star recognition from INK.Next by Ruud Stassen, Ferrie Aalders, and our customer Philips by Peter Wagner and Simon Braaksma.
This makes the Wittenburg Group the first company in the Netherlands to obtain this recognition based on the new Business Excellence model. This journey gave meaningful insights and will bring Wittenburg, Witcom, and Xunfeng closer to their mission: ‘We improve the quality of life by creating innovative materials’.
